World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2026
The WSIS Forum is a global event that brings people together to shape the future of digital technologies and its impact on society and development. It provides a space where governments, the private sector, civil society, academia, the youth, and international organizations can meet, share ideas, and work together on digital challenges and opportunities.
The Forum was created as part of a United Nations process to promote a more inclusive and people-centered digital world. It plays an important role in supporting international cooperation on digital issues such as connectivity, innovation, and digital inclusion.
Each year, the Forum is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in partnership with UNESCO, UNDP, and UNCTAD, along with many other United Nations organizations. It is co-hosted by ITU and Switzerland.
What happens at the Forum?
The WSIS Forum offers a wide range of activities, including discussions, workshops, and exhibitions. It is designed to encourage open dialogue and practical collaboration across different sectors.
A key part of the event is the High-Level Track, where leaders such as heads of states, ministers, business executives, mayors, and heads of international organizations come together. These sessions allow countries to share their digital priorities, exchange experiences, and explore ways to work together.
The Forum also highlights the latest developments in areas like:
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Internet connectivity and infrastructure
- Cybersecurity
- Digital public services
- Online safety and misinformation
- Bridging the digital divide
At the same time, it creates space to discuss risks and challenges in the digital world and how they can be addressed collectively.
Why is it important?
The WSIS Forum is recognized by the United Nations as a key global platform for advancing digital cooperation. It helps track progress, gather input from different stakeholders, and turn ideas into action.
Following the recent WSIS+20 review by the UN General Assembly, the Forum continues to play a central role in supporting countries as they implement new commitments for the digital future.
WSIS Forum 2026 will feature:
- An expanded High-Level Track with strong ministerial participation
- The WSIS Prizes, recognizing outstanding digital projects
- Interactive exhibitions and networking opportunities
- A diverse programme shaped through an open consultation process
